Publish

You have finished your writing. Your project has been proofread, edited, and scrutinized by friends. What comes next?

One choice is to self-publish on your own. Christian Writing Services is prepared to help you through the process. Of course, for starters, we can edit your book. But our services do not stop there. We can prepare your book for printing with our customized typesetting and cover design services. We can guide you in selecting a printer and communicate with the printer of your choice regarding the technical aspects of the production. And we are developing ways to help you market your book. Remember, no matter what publication route you choose, if you want to sell your book, be prepared to do the marketing footwork!

A second choice is to use the services of a self-publishing company. You will pay them to help you through the process. Again, although most self-publishing companies  offer help with marketing, their help in this area is usually minimal.  Self-publishing has increased in popularity during recent years. On ourSelf-Publishers page we have listed some self-publishing companies to consider. Although we attempt to list only trustworthy companies, we have had no personal experience with most of them. Carefully review their services and terms. Be especially on guard not to give away any rights to your book. Find out how many books they will give you free, what your discount will be on the ones you purchase, how many you are expected to buy. And be sure to ask the terms for cancellation.

A third choice—and the one most people think of first—is a traditional publisher. For some, this might be the best choice—but consider this. Publishers receive many, many more manuscripts than they will ever use. It is especially difficult for a previously unpublished writer to find success there. Even if you do, it is usually a slow process. Some new writers think that if they can just get published, they won't have to market their book. But unless your book is an immediate success, you'll find that you may have to do most of your own marketing.

All this said, depending on your genre, your timing, and most importantly the Lord's plan for you, maybe traditional publishing is your answer. Perhaps your book fits a niche for a publisher.

If you don't already have a copy, I urge you to purchase Sally Stuart's Christian Writers' Market Guide for 2010. Whether you are writing a book, an article, or even text for greeting cards, you will find this book invaluable. Description from Amazon.com: "For 24 years running, the Christian Writers’ Market Guide has remained the most comprehensive, complete, essential, and highly-recommended resource for Christian writers, agents, editors, publishers, publicists, and those teaching writing classes. And it’s the tool for both for beginners and industry veterans.

This perennial guide contains a variety of indexes–listed by topic, alphabetical listing of publishing houses and agents, and more–to more than 1,200 markets. Those markets include greeting cards and specialty writing, e-book and traditional book publishing and periodicals. Also listed are literary agents, writing resource listings, and contests.

Writer Beware is a helpful Website that offers Warnings About literary fraud and other schemes, scams, and pitfalls that target writers. These words from their site: "Although SFWA is a USA-based organization of science fiction and fantasy writers, the Committee's efforts aren't limited by country or genre. We've designed the Writer Beware website so it can be used by any writer, regardless of subject, style, genre, or nationality."

Overwhelming? Remember, we are here to help you in any way we can. Please feel free to email us with your questions. And check out the information in our Help for Writers section.
